I wanted to provide you with an update regarding E-Scooters, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Op Scootherts which relates to the seizure and destruction of E-Scooters and illegally modified E-bikes has officially achieved the milestone of 100 seizures!
The initiative was started due to the amount of reports from members of the public, highlighting the anti-social behaviour caused by them as well as criminal offences that come with riding them. The aim was to reduce/prevent crime, work with the public and make Stevenage a safer place. I also made sure that with the amount of seizures that the operation entailed, that the paperwork would be streamlined so that multiple seizures could be made at the same time which allows us to get more results for you guys.
Since the birth of the operation, we have had some amazing results, whether that would be arresting prolific offenders who use E-Scooters/E-bikes for crime, those who ride in an anti-social manner causing road traffic collisions and near misses or even securing an extra charge for suspect who were already arrested.
The book does not stop there as these riders also go to court and we have also seen many great results. The average fines for motoring offences relating to E-scooters and E-bikes are £600.00, however I have seen them go over £1'000.00 if there are multiple offences.
The Operation has become so successful, that St Albans Neighbourhood Policing Team reached out to us asking to use the operation in their area. We had some amazing results there as well, seizing X2 E-scooters and X2 E-bikes in only two hours and already, the officers in St Albans have received well deserved praise for their hard work.
It is clear to me that there is still more to do and that this is an issue not just related to Stevenage. I aim to expand this operation further to help neighbouring towns, as today in St Albans demonstrated to me that this work needs to go further afield.
I would like to thank you guys for both reporting these crimes/issues to us, allowing us to take action and feedback given. We aim to continue to deliver positive results and make Hertfordshire a safer place, one seizure at a time.
Tackling antisocial behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police. February 2025 saw the publication of the Ministry of Justice Crime and Policing Bill: Antisocial behaviour (ASB) factsheet. This outlined a number of new measures including making powers to seize vehicles under section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 easier to use, allowing the police to react robustly and immediately to the anti-social use of motor vehicles. If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.herts.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
